Veronica Heley's writing is smooth and polished, her characters are engaging and well-developed, and the stories are intriguing. I enjoyed "Cry for Kit" very much -- and stayed up far too late to read it in one go because I just had to know how it ended. I did find one scene to be too cliched, yet even that scene was well done. This was written many, many years ago, and some younger readers may not have the patience for such old books, but I found it to be a delightful read and one that I would enjoy reading again one day.Ms. Heley has had several publishers, and it's important to consider the publisher in deciding whether to buy the Kindle edition or a print edition. This was published by Endeavour Press and meets its high standards for readability. Some of her other books, produced by other publishers, are not formatted properly for Kindles. I've found the Endeavour Press editions to be always reliable, the Severn House editions to be mostly reliable and other publishers to be unreliable when it comes to her books. I highly recommend using the "Look Inside" feature before clicking on a Kindle edition to determine whether the formatting is acceptable to you.

Kit grew up in England and was popular with the boys which resulted in jealousy from many of the girls her age, as well as her sister. After an illegitimate pregnancy she had to leave her baby boy with her sister. She moved to America and married well enabling her to send money home. Sadly her husband dies. Kit returns to England a wealthy, attractive woman to discover that she is no longer wanted in her home town. Attempts are made to kill her and the reader is kept on edge until the last few pages. A light and enjoyable read.
